Chinese Myths Retell Gourd girl and gourd boy: This myth is about a farmer who is fed up with the thunder god as his crops would not grow if there was too much thunder. So the farmer challenged the god and put him in a cage. One day the farmer went out and left his children in the house. He told them that they could not talk to the thunder god and not give him anything especially water. But the thunder god convinced the children to give him water making an oath that meant he would not touch the children. When the water touched the lips of the thunder god he had enough power to break the bars and go back to heaven. On his way he gave the children some seeds and told them to plant them. When the thunder god returned he made a massive storm that only the children survived as they went into the massive gourd that was grown by the seeds they got. The archer and the suns: The Archer and the Suns is about the god of the eastern sky (Di Jun) and his goddess bride (Xi He) who have ten children (suns). They all live in giant mulberry tree named Fu Sang. Each morning it was the turn of one sun to make his journey, bringing warmth and life to the world. While one sun is in the sky the other nine are to remain in the branches of Fu Sang. Xi He ruled that there must never be more than one of her suns in the sky at once, and that was the way it was for 1000 years. Soon the suns became tired of the same routine every day and realised that they never got to play all together as one sun was always in the sky. So one day the suns decided that they would sneak out of Fu Sang before their mum came to pick one of them up. At first all was going great, people were happy, the suns were having fun. But then the people realised how hot it was. Crops shrivelled and died, people were blinded by the brightness but worst of all because all the lakes and animals died the creatures had to come up from their homes and start eating humans.
